Mission:
To sabotage rail communications in the Genoa-Piacenza-Spezia area by
destroying the Roccamurata tunnel (P 7056, Italy, 1/100,000, sheets
71, 82, 83, and 84), and adjacent targets on the Piacenza-Spezia railroad.
Operation:
The shore party and the boat party left the port of Bastia on 2 January
1944 at 1930 hours on USN PT 207. The boat proceeded without event to
its destination, a pinpoint near Voltri, about twelve miles southwest
of Genoa, where the reception party was to be and flash certain pre-arranged
signals, namely, “Danger,” “Come In,” or “Wait
One-half Hour”. The boat arrived off the pinpoint at 0200 hours
on 3 January and cruised up and down for 30 minutes at about 400 yards
off shore. During this time no lights or signals were observed which
could be recognized as signals. The boat then returned to Bastia, arriving
at 0730 hours 3 January. Lt Benucci and the five enlisted men returned
to Ile Rousse on the same day. Inasmuch as we did not have radio contact
with the Valentine reception committee, the reasons for the failure
of the committee to appear were not known.
